We all know that our general health status largely depends on the meals we take. You can’t take unhealthy meals and expect to be healthy. Here are a few healthy meal ideas that will keep you at the pink of health.
Take the right proportion of meals.
All meals should be taken in the right proportions. Breakfast should always be the largest meal, followed by lunch and supper in that order. Breakfast should be the largest because it is meant to replenish the nutrients that have been used up during the night and to provide more nutrients for the day’s activities. Some people eat too much food for their bodies, thereby becoming obese. Others skip one meal and decide to compensate in another, leading to overeating.
Take a lot of fruits and vegetables.
Fruits and vegetables are full of vitamins, antioxidants, minerals, and fiber. Go for green and naturally sweet vegetables and colorful fruits for the best results. Take fruits for snacks instead of the regular snacks that are sweetened with artificial sugar. Replace fatty or sugary desserts with a fruit as well.
Keep all your meals balanced.
Ensure that your meals do not lack important nutrients such as calcium. Good sources of calcium include low-fat dairy products, vegetables, and beans. Protein levels should also be considered. Precisely, adults should take 1-1.5 grams of lean proteins per day. Lactating women may need more proteins for milk production. As a rule of the thumb, too many fats should be avoided, but it is also advisable to enjoy healthy fats such as monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats.
Avoid junk food.
Everybody who is keen on healthy eating must be aware that junk foods keep one in the vicious cycle of health problems. To add an insult to the injury, junk foods are addictive, and those affected will tell you that avoiding these meals is just as difficult as stopping smoking or alcohol addiction. Avoid junk foods at all costs and replace them with healthy carbohydrates and whole grains. Healthy carbs are found in beans, fruits, and vegetables as well as whole grains. White flour, white rice, and refined sugar are unhealthy carbs.
Avoid too much sugar and too much salt in your meals
Excess sugar in the body is the source of many health problems such as obesity, diabetes, and depression, to name but a few. Sugar is found in cereals, bread, pasta sauce, instant mashed potatoes, fast foods, and canned soups, among others. You thus need to know which meals contain sugar so that you can take such meals in find moderation. Check food labels to see which ones contain low fats, so that you don’t take excess sugar unknowingly. Adding too much salt to your food may also to high blood pressure, so keep your salt intake low.
Health is wealth. You have to be careful what you eat, or else you will be in trouble. It is worth noting here that healthy meals are not those that are prepared following strict dietary limitations. Healthy meals do not necessarily have to keep the meals you love out of the equation. Remember you need all meal types, so the best thing to do would be to practice moderation in all meals.
